Heart of Tuna by Tiziana Savinelli

A glimpse into the ancient practice of tuna fishing in the Mediterranean. La Mattanza is over 1000 years old and is used by the island fishermen of Sardegna and Sicily. Fishermen go out in large numbers and man barges that enclose a rectangular area. Nets are strung from the barges and other nets channel the approaching tuna fish into the enclosure. The men then jump into the water standing on the nets and kill the tuna. The event is followed by religious chants to give thanks for the abundance of the fish. Photographer resident of Carloforte off southern Sardinia, Tiziana Savinelli, has documented La Mattanza in the channel between Sardegna and Sicily with a series of poetic photos that are explicit in nature and are a realistic portrait of this timeless event that is slowly disappearing together with the disappearance of tuna as overfishing by modern ocean fleets and ocean warming trends depletes world stocks.
